Hi All,

Everyone who knows The Life Wellness Approach knows I never advocate much other than water and a couple of dairy alternatives like rice milk and almond milk unsweetened. Here is a great report I feel you can benefit from that relates to healthy options and sugar-loaded drinks, even if they are named “Vitamin Water”.

Beverage Consumption a Bigger Factor in Weight

When it comes to weight loss, what you drink may be more important than what you eat, according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Researchers examined the relationship between beverage consumption among adults and weight change and found that weight loss was positively associated with a reduction in liquid calorie consumption and liquid calorie intake had a stronger impact on weight than solid calorie intake. The results are published in the April 1, 2009, issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

“Both liquid and solid calories were associated with weight change, however, only a reduction in liquid calorie intake was shown to significantly affect weight loss during the 6-month follow up,” said Benjamin CaballeroMD, PhD, senior author of the study and a professor with the Bloomberg School’s Department of International Health. “A reduction in liquid calorie intake was associated with a weight loss of 0.25 kg at 6 months and 0.24 kg at 18 months. Among sugar-sweetened beverages, a reduction of 1 serving was associated with a weight loss of 0.5 kg at 6 months and 0.7 kg at 18 months. Of the seven types of beverages examined, sugar-sweetened beverages were the only beverages significantly associated with weight change.”

Researchers conducted a prospective study of 810 adults aged 25-79 years old participating in the PREMIER trial, an 18-month randomized, controlled, behavioral intervention. Caballero along with colleagues from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; the National Heart, Lung, and Blood institute; Duke University; the Pennington Biomedical Research Center; the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research; the University of Alabama; and Pennsylvania State University measured participant’s weight and height using a calibrated scale and a wall-mounted stadiometer at both 6 and 18 months. Dietary intake was measured by conducting unannounced 24-hour dietary recall interviews by telephone. Researchers divided beverages into several categories based on calorie content and nutritional composition: sugar-sweetened beverages (regular soft drinks, fruit drinks, fruit punch, or high-calorie beverages sweetened with sugar), diet drinks (diet soda and other “diet” drinks sweetened with artificial sweeteners), milk (whole milk, 2 percent reduced-fat milk, 1 percent low-fat milk, and skim milk), 100 percent juice (100 percent fruit and vegetable juice), coffee and tea with sugar, coffee and tea without sugar and alcoholic beverages. They found that at 37 percent sugar-sweetened beverages were the leading source of liquid calories.

Consumption of liquid calories from beverages has increased in parallel with the obesity epidemic. Earlier studies by Bloomberg School researchers project that 75 percent of U.S. adults could be overweight or obese by 2015 and have linked the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages to the obesity epidemic, which affects two-thirds of adults and increases the risk for adverse health conditions such as type 2 diabetes. Researchers recommend limited liquid calorie intake among adults and to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage consumption as a means to accomplish weight loss or avoid excess weight gain.

“Among beverages, sugar-sweetened beverages was the only beverage type significantly associated with weight change at both the 6- and 18-month follow up periods,” said Liwei Chen, MD, PhD, MHS, lead author of the study and a Bloomberg School graduate. “Changes in the consumption of diet drinks and alcoholic beverages were inversely associated with weight loss, but were not statistically significant. Our study supports policy recommendations and public health efforts to reduce intakes of liquid calories, particularly from sugar-sweetened beverages, in the general population.”

“Reduction in Consumption of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages is Associated with Weight Loss: The PREMIER Trial” was written by Liwei Chen, Lawrence J. Appel, Catherine Loria, Pao-Hwa Lin, Catherine M. Champagne, Patricia J. Elmer, Jamy D. Ard, Diane Mitchell, Bryan C. Batch, Laura P. Svetkey and Benjamin Caballero.

The research was supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; National Institutes of Health; the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for Human Nutrition; and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Another great question, this one from Erminia:
How do you optimize your fitness level (cardio, strength, flexibility), while ensuring you’ll be injury free (or almost ensuring). Often times I would like to train towards something like the Ride to Conquer Cancer etc. and am held back because I worry that I will pay for the extra training with my body (back).
Having incorporated Yoga, and using things like chiro, osteo, bowen, massage, accupuncture in my life are tools I thought would really keep me injury free for years. Although I’ve not really experienced anything major, I don’t like to be held back.
Is this just something one has to accept at the ripe young age of 44, or do you have tricks up your sleeve you’d like to share? I’m hoping you have a long sleeved shirt on, and not a tank top – ha!

You must have a plan when you are going to shop for your groceries or you may as well just ask the next person beside you in the parking lot to double-up on their choices and you will meet them at the check-out counter, please and thank you!

To really succeed in the healthy and fit categories of your life wellness journey you must plan for success. I always plan for three or four days out and actually make a concerted effort to mathematically tally up what we will be needing. This way two things are accomplished:

1. You never waste food and have to throw out rotting vegetables or produce and

2. You always succeed in buying the heathiest choices because you actually have a plan laid out

Do this for one month which would translate into 8 trips to the supermarket for our family. At this point see how different you and your family feel with that many weeks of heatlhy food choices and great breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. Some would consider this a lot of time but the time I spend doing this is well worth it if I don’t want to be scrounging at the last minute ever and opting out of healthy meal or snack choices just because I am confronted with low blood sugar and the only thing my brain is telling me is to raise that blood sugar level now, no matter how you do it just do it quick!

In these low blood sugar situations I am never reaching for the local coffee establishment or fast-food joint, simply because I have planned ahead and actually have the healthiest snack choices and I always pack them in a cooler bag for my time away from home.

Plan ahead and write out your most important “to do list” and that is the “What to buy for this week grocery list!”

Healthy eating and successful lifewellness journey to all!

The correct nutrition that is! Incorrect or poor nutrition choices will never assist the body to achieve the optimal state you are striving for. I want to share a question from a member of this blog:

How do I get rid of my muffin top? I workout 5-6 days a week and this area doesn’t seem to be getting smaller. It does seem to be mostly skin. My abs are very strong but I can’t get my middle to get tight. Thanks, Tony

The best and only answer I will give here is the best approach to achieving the optimal body-shape you are looking for must be to seriously scrutinize everything you are eating and drinking and really tightening up on all angles. Barring the skin issue, you must take a committed approach and log your nutrition, exercise, and measurements and then tweak one or all of them to change what you need to change. It may take a little while but it is definitely worth it! The correct exercise for your level is also extremely important but it seems like you are doing well in that category, yes/no? Age in my mind is not a huge factor, only in that if you have poor nutrition it is more difficult to have that body and body fat percentage where you would desire. Foods to avoid, well let me count them:

1. Sugar in all it’s hidden forms too

2. Processed and or refined foods

3. Alcohol

4. Pop

5. White flour products and white starchy carbs

6. Excess salt/sodium and the like

7. Low nutrition value foods that you would have in a hurry even if you think it is healthy like a whole wheat bagle or something similar

What to include:

Read my article you received the day you signed up for this blog titled The Reinvention of Nutrition Basics.

I hope this helps because I know how difficult it is to get from 14% bodyfat to below 10% but it can be done if you are willing to change certain lifestyle habits to achieve this goal.

Hey everyone, I am going to be explaining a question posted by some good friends of mine in a video blogspot format below. However, first I just want to share I am in the midst of checking into a supplement company very closely and it seems they could be my next shining superstar since they are more scientific-based like I am but I need a little more information to confirm my desired fact-finding.

But first here is the question I wish to answer for tonight:

“Hey Tony thanks for all the great articles we have learned much. We would like to know which vitamin brand you suggest taking (as an everyday multivitamin). Also, we give the kids “progressive” vitamin brand as we were told that is one of the best to give from health food store clerk. Is that true? We tried to give the kids fish oil and fish oil vitamins(no luck). Can you suggest something? we even tried placing drops of fish oil in orange juice. The response was “this juice tastes yucky!”"

Thanks for your help,
